Course Title:  THE ART AND SCIENCE OF TEACHING ADULTS

(Fundamentals of Training Design and Delivery)

This three-part workshop gives trainers the knowledge and skills they need to prepare and deliver adult training that gets results. The program is highly interactive and takes a practical, hands-on approach that participants find exceptionally effective.

The program does four things for participants:
1. It gives them an understanding of how adults learn and why it is critical that training be designed and delivered correctly,

2. It teaches them an exceptionally effective instructional design model,

3. It teaches them the principles and techniques of effective delivery, and

4. They retain what they learn because they immediately apply it.

Session 1 - Fundamentals of Adult Learning

Session Objective

When participants finish this session they will have a fundamental understanding of how adults learn, including how they perceive, evaluate, and process information in the classroom, and how they learn new skills and develop new abilities.

Session Overview

The session begins by establishing participant perspective. It looks at traditional education and the beliefs and practices it is built on, and discusses the traditional teaching model and its usefulness in teaching adults.

Part 1, Patterns Of Perception, teaches participants how adults perceive what the instructor offers them and how they deal with it unconsciously. It also looks at some of the strategies our students use to determine what they will and will not learn.

Part 2, The Learning Process, examines the adult learning cycle, and the stages and steps students go through to acquire new knowledge and develop new skills.

Part 3, Connecting With Your Students, examines the principles of adult learning, and how they apply to the design and delivery of effective training.

Session 2 - The Process Of Instructional Design

Session Objectives
By the end of this session participants will understand the instructional design process, and be able to apply the basic principles of adult learning presented in session one to the design and development of effective training.

Session Overview

Part 1, Defining Your Purpose, addresses needs assessment, defining objectives, and testing and evaluation. Participants learn to identify the training need their training program will be designed to satisfy, formulate objectives that, when achieved, will fill the training need, and they develop testing and evaluation methods for verifying that their program met it's objectives and filled the need.

Part 2, Designing Your Program, leads participants through the process of developing a session plan, including determining learning segment objectives, content, and delivery sequence, selecting instruction techniques, and determining resource needs, testing methods, and program timing.

Part 3, Developing Your Material, addresses subject matter research, organizing and using information, writing the program, and instructional aid development and use.

Session 3 - Fundamentals of Effective Delivery

Session Objectives
By the end of this session participants will understand the fundamentals of effective adult training delivery, and they will have first hand delivery experience.

Part 1, Delivering The Product, teaches participants the elements of effective training presentation, including platform skills and classroom management.

Part 2, Practical Application, gives participants the opportunity to practice their delivery skills by delivering a mini-training seminar. (Optionally, the presentations can be videotaped so participants can review their performance later.)

Part 3, Professional Development Plan, leads the participant through the process of designing and developing a plan for continuously improving their skills.
