Title: THE IMMUTABLE LAWS OF LEADERSHIP
(Principles of Effective Management and Leadership)
There has never been a greater need for leadership in business than there is today. Our ultra-competitive, breakneck paced environment makes it difficult to get our bearings, and we rarely feel that we are in control and are the masters of our own destiny.
As a leader, it's your job to deal with these issues, not only for yourself, but for your entire organization as well. It's up to you to create a sense of purpose and self-determination that breathes life into your organization and energizes it, that makes people feel they have a reason to come to work every day.
And it's up to you to create an organization that is effective and efficient - one where every person and every resource is aligned and focused on fulfilling that purpose, and where every person routinely and enthusiastically goes above and beyond what's required of him or her.
And your responsibility doesn't stop there. You also have to continuously improve, not only your own performance, but also that of your entire organization. If you don't, the eventual outcome is certain - you won't be able to compete and you won't have an organization to lead.
The implications are clear. To be an effective leader in today's business world:
1. You must know where you are going. You have to have focus, a real sense of purpose and direction for yourself and your organization. If you don't, the result is a sense of aimlessness and a lack of commitment to the success of the team.
2. You must plan your success. When you know where you're going and you have a plan for getting there, not only do you dramatically increase your chances of success, you also create a sense of self-determination for yourself and your organization. People are committed to the organization's success and to you as the leader when they're confident they'll succeed and they know how they're going to do it.
3. You must actively manage and improve workflow. The ever-increasing pressure to improve effectiveness and efficiency has created unprecedented demands on us and on our employees to do more with less.
Instead of simply increasing workloads and working harder, you have to learn to work smarter. You have to engage your entire organization in finding new ways to do things - ways that improve quality and productivity, and at the same time decrease the workload instead of increasing it.
4. You must create a productive work environment. As a leader, your most important responsibility is to create an environment that is a catalyst for improved productivity, one that inspires people to give their best effort every day - the kind of environment that makes people want to commit themselves to the organization's success and the fulfillment of its purpose.
5. You must continuously improve. The equation is simple - if you don't improve, you don't compete. Continuous improvement that is an integrated fact of life, a part of doing business day-to-day, keeps you ahead of the game in two ways: first, it keeps you competitive; and second, it gives the people in your organization a sense of pride in what they and their organization do. People want to be part of a winning team, and the team that continuously improves itself continuously wins.
This program is designed to help you become a true leader. As a leader, you not only have to understand the principles of effective leadership, you also have to be able to apply them in the real world.
This program helps you do both. It gives you the theoretical knowledge you need to understand each principle and why it is important to your success as a leader, and it gives you the practical knowledge and the tools you need to apply the principles immediately in your own organization.
The Immutable Laws of Leadership is based on the best practices of the most successful companies and business leaders in the world, and everything it teaches you has been proven successful.
IMMUTABLE LAW #1
EFFECTIVE LEADERS KNOW WHERE THEY ARE GOING
The old saying goes something like, "If you don't know where you are going, any road will do". Unfortunately, in today's business world just any road won't do. We can no longer afford to wander the business landscape aimlessly and simply react to what happens around us. The cost is just too high.
Instead, we need to be focused - we need to have a sense of common purpose and direction that tells us exactly why we exist as an organization, and we have to know precisely what we intend to achieve. If we don't, we are uncommitted, ineffective, and inefficient, and we cannot compete.
As leaders it's our job to create that focus, that clarity of purpose, not only for ourselves, but for every member of our organization. Only then can we know exactly where we are going and why.
In the first workshop segment we go through the four-step process of creating organizational focus:
Step 1 - Understanding Where You Are Today
Step 2 - Deciding Where You Want To Go
Step 3 - Clarifying Your Purpose As An Organization
Step 4 - Creating Your Vision For Success
IMMUTABLE LAW #2
EFFECTIVE LEADERS PLAN FOR THE FUTURE
To lead your organization from where it is today to the achievement of its purpose and the realization of its vision you must plan.
Why do you need a plan? Why not just manage through whatever comes up? There are many good answers to those questions, but a few of the most important are:
· That planning provides the roadmap for your journey - the instructions for how to get from here to there - not only for you, but also for everyone in your organization. Without it you are wandering around aimlessly, simply hoping to find your way.
· Involvement engenders commitment, and involving the people in your organization in the process of determining their future is an effective way to gain their support.
· Without a clear plan for your future you will have a difficult time achieving your goals and keeping everybody focused on, and committed to, the future success of the organization.
Besides the issues listed above, planning also helps you and your organization deal with many of the other challenges we face today, including:
· The rapid rate of change in the business environment,
· The fast pace of business,
· Increasing complexity,
· The ever-increasing demand for greater efficiency,
· Improved management decision-making,
· And many others
Contrary to popular opinion, developing effective plans is not a complicated process. That's not to say it isn't hard work - it is. But the process is simple, straightforward, and easy to understand.
As you invest the time and energy in developing your plans, keep in mind that a carefully prepared plan is the most powerful leadership and management tool ever invented.
IMMUTABLE LAW #3
EFFECTIVE LEADERS CONTINUOUSLY
IMPROVE EFFICIENCY AND PRODUCTIVITY
In business today the pressure to improve efficiency and increase productivity is relentless. As a leader you are responsible not only for getting the job done, but also for getting it done well with the most efficient use of resources possible. As a result, workloads continue to increase dramatically while resources decrease - and there is no end in sight.
The solution to the problem is not to work harder, but to work smarter. That means actively managing, and continuously improving, the way work flows through your organization. That's not to say you need to be involved in all of the details of what goes on - on the contrary, you need to be able to effectively manage and improve workflow strategically, without getting mired in details.
Managing your workflow strategically means managing your operation as a set of high-level business processes, and it requires four basic things:
· First, that you clearly understand the workflow
· Second, that you have the capability of effectively managing workflow at a high level,
· Third, that you actually manage from a high level, and
· Fourth, that you engage your entire organization in the systematic and continuous improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the workflow processes.
IMMUTABLE LAW #4
EFFECTIVE LEADERS CREATE
PRODUCTIVE WORK ENVIRONMENTS
As a leader your most important responsibility is to create an environment that inspires people to do their best work every day, and to commit themselves to the success of the organization. To create such an environment there are six fundamental requirements:
Requirement #1 - You have to behave like a leader.
Requirement #2 - You have to create a healthy, productive culture.
Requirement #3 - You have to clearly define roles and responsibilities.
Requirement #4 - You have to educate and develop your organization.
Requirement #5 - You have to unlock your organization's potential.
Requirement #6 - You have to motivate your organization to fulfill its purpose.
IMMUTABLE LAW #5
EFFECTIVE LEADERS CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE
In today's business world the leader who isn't continuously improving his or her organization's performance is falling behind.
The most effective way to continuously improve performance is to integrate continuous improvement into the day-to-day operation of the business.
Continuous improvement that is an integrated fact of life, a part of doing business day-to-day, keeps you ahead of the game in two ways: first, it keeps you competitive, and second, it gives the people in your organization a sense of pride in what they and their organization do. People want to be part of a winning team, and the team that continuously improves itself continuously wins.
In the final workshop segment participants are introduced to an exceptionally effective, integrated six-step continuous improvement model based on the Plan, Do, Check, Act, continuous improvement cycle.
