Translator Testing

Many bilingual people are called upon to translate even thoiugh they are not formally trained in the skills and ethics of professional translation. Panoltia's translator testing program is designed to ensure that translators are competent and capable of delivering high quality accurate translations in their respective disciplines.

Testing Overview

Testing consists of two parts: document translation and questions and answers. Questions are of various types, including multiple choice, true/false, and various others. Documents and questions are designed to challenge the candidate without attempting to mislead, or “trick” them. The test measures candidates’ knowledge and skills in three areas:

Section 1 - Language Proficiency - To function as a skilledt translator, the first requirement is language proficiency. The test assesses literacy in both English and Spanish, including comprehension and fundamental language skills.

Section 2 - Vocabulary and Usage – The second area of knowledge essential to a translator is familiarity with a wide range of vocabulary and terminology and its proper usage. This includes generic and discipline specific terminology, regional language variations, false cognates, idioms, and more.

Section 3 - Ethics and Professional Conduct - The final area addressed by the test is knowledge of translator ethics and standards of professional conduct.

The candidate must demonstrate:

That they are fluent in both Spanish and English, including discipline-specific language and vocabulary

That they are able to transfer all meaning faithfully and precisely from the source language to the target language,

That they understand and can adhere to the translator’s code of ethics and professionalism, and

That they understand and can correctly apply all of the other skills and knowledge relevant to translating in their respective discipline
